Department of Genetics and Breeding
Activities of the Department of Genetics and Breeding:
- study, maintenance and conduct of the collection of cereal genetic resources (spring barley, oats, rye)
- research and breeding of spring malting barley, development of new genotypes and lines of spring malting barley
- research and breeding of special genotypes of barley, particularly non-malting and with hulless grain for different end use (healthy human nutrition, feeding, other than food purposes, etc.)
- research and breeding of winter barley, development of new genotypes and lines of winter barley of feeding and malting types
- research in genetics and breeding of wheat, triticale and non-traditional cereal crops
- maintenance breeding and multiplication of our own varieties and represented foreign varieties of spring barley, winter barley, winter wheat and triticale, testing home and foreign new breeding lines and varieties in inter-station trials and trials for the List of Recommended Varieties
- maintenance breeding of the other crops
- multiplication of specific breeding materials
Head: Ing. Kateřina Vaculová CSc.
Deputy head: Ing. Marta Balounová
Research areas:
- detection of donors with desired properties and completing the evaluation of current genetic resources of cereal crops
- selection of suitable donors with potential use in breeding for specific end use (improved feeding quality, healthy human nutrition)
- more detailed study of landraces and/or materials collected, among which valuable donors of technological and nutritional grain quality can be detected
- transfer of traits using interspecific hybridization
- minor crops for specific use in food production
- new genetic diversity for current needs of breeding and growing wheat and barley
- improvement of barley malting quality
- improvement of food and feed grain quality of cereals
Services provided:
- testing home and foreign new breeding lines in inter-station trials
- lectures and consultations related to cultivars
- postharvest treatment (cleaning) of field crops for breeding
